The Future of IoT Looks Bright

IoT, or the Internet of Things, is the interconnection of devices, from mobile phones to fitbits, through networks such as the internet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. The idea of monitoring or controlling devices remotely has been around as long as the internet itself, with the programmers at the University of Cambridge setting up a camera to remotely monitor coffee levels in the communal coffee pot way back in 1991. Since then the number of connected devices has exploded, with the number of devices officially overtaking the number of people on earth around 2008.

The Time is Now

In 2000 IoT hit the mainstream in devices other than computers with LG’s release of the internet connected refrigerator. Since then everything from vending machines to kids’ toys have become connected. As technology continues to miniaturise, components become more affordable, battery capacities increase and network signal reach extends across the globe, our ability to add benefit to products through IoT connectivity continues to grow. It is forecast that there will be 50 billion connected products in the world by 2020.

Seebo Breaks Down Barriers

Despite IoT connectivity’s potential benefits, it can be daunting for established companies or new start-ups to develop an IoT device. Two of the biggest challenges are the speed at which technology is advancing and the specialisation required to complete different product development stages. The development of a new product can require input from industrial designers, electronics engineers, firmware and software engineers, each of whom need to be on top of the latest advancements in their industry and able to work harmoniously as a unit. Product Design timelines can also be long, with electronic hardware often needing to be designed and prototyped before firmware and software can be developed and tested. Thankfully new development platform Seebo is set to reduce a lot of these challenges and Bayly is proud to be partnering with them in Australia.

Better Design, Faster

Seebo are an international organisation founded in Israel, offering a global platform designed specifically to simplify and speed up the process of developing IoT enabled products. The platform does this by providing tools and information at a range of stages. A visualisation studio allows for simple representation of the product’s desired functions and feeds into a hardware engine capable of recommending components based on function and cost, and even generating a test circuit. You don’t need to know exactly what sensors or processors you need, just what you want the device to do, Seebo can assist with the rest. This information then feeds into a simulator which allows software developers to virtually test their work before any physical prototypes are built. In this way, Seebo provides the ability to substantially reduce the time-to-market of new IoT products developed using their platform.

This exciting step forward in making IoT development quicker and more efficient has drawn a lot of attention internationally, with organisations such as Intel and Autodesk getting on board, and we are very excited to partner with Seebo here in Australia. In introducing Seebo to the Australian market Bayly hopes to build on Australia’s strong reputation for design innovation by making IoT design more accessible and efficient.
